Wrap with Love

Wrap with Love is a voluntary organisation which started in 1992 when Sonia Gidley-King organised a group of friends to craft squares with left over yarn. The squares were put together to make wraps which now warm the shoulders and augment the bedding of grateful recipients in over 30 countries. More than 180,000 wraps, made by over 25,000 volunteers throughout Australia, have been dispatched to a variety of agencies operating within Australia and overseas.

Each year in NSW the ABC organises a knit-in at their studios in Ultimo, Sydney. This is a big event, broadcast on AM702, with people coming from near and far to contribute time and skill in preparing wraps. Until a couple of years ago, the ABC also generously helped by collecting the wraps knitted in country NSW, and arranging fr them to be brought to Sydney.

In 2009 the collection role in NSW was taken over by Rotary clubs throughout NSW, under the coordination of The Rotary Club of Sydney Cove. There is considerable communication with all parts of the state involved in this process, putting together knitters, local collectors and deliverers in order to bring the squares and wraps to the organisation’s warehouse in Alexandria, Sydney for packaging and distribution to needy people and locations within Australia and abroad.

Global warming, one square at a time.
